Get on the road! Take your first trip as an Uber Driver

It’s all about flow.  Take a deep breath, relax, and let it go. Being nervous on your first couple trips is normal, make sure to add the Uber sticker to your windsheild so passengers can track you down. When you ready to GO ONLINE and start accepting rides you can sit in your car and wait until you get a request or drive around to surge areas (red hot zone).

Be friendly with passengers. But not too friendly. FOLLOW YOUR GPS, most common app is Google Maps or Waze that will work directly with the Uber app, never try to hurry. Traffic will make you nuts if you try to fight it.  Passengers will flip out if you’re trying to hammer your way through rush hour, so just ease up, and let it happen.

Know where your hazard lights are and make it second nature to use them when you pull over for a pick up and drop off.

Take it slow. When you accept a request, if you don’t immediately know what your next turn should be, pull over to get your GPS set up. The few seconds you spend doing that are worth it to not pass a turn you need to make. If your driving on the freeway, drive in the right lane so that you can easily take the next exit.

After you pick up the passenger, confirm their name and destination with them, if there is no address then you can enter it in the app before you drive.

BE CAREFUL on the road. You must be alert at all times, and be very aware at how distracting the navigation part is. Watch for PEDESTRIANS instead of looking down at your phone, and try to avoid using the app while driving.

Lastly, have fun enjoy the journey, every ride you pick up is money in your bank account.

Set up direct deposit with Uber’s Vault & get paid weekly

The Uber Vault is secured by the same company that works with PayPal. So your information is safe with Uber. Uber is entirely cashless: your riders will be charged immediately after every trip. And every Monday, Uber will add up your weekly earnings and wire the money to your bank account. Partners usually receive their weekly earnings latest on Thursdays which you can view in your email or by logging into your account. In order to set up payment this must be done via a system Uber used call vault. This system handles direct deposit and IRS tax information. Yes, you will have to provide your Social Security Number, Address, Bank Routing Number and Account Number. Uber only pays with direct deposit, all transactions are cashless.

If you do not have a bank account, you can always get a pre-paid card that allows direct deposits. You can visit your nearest store like Walmart, Target. All you need is a routing number and account number to get paid.

Direct Deposit

If you already have a checking account, you can receive your payments via direct deposits to your account. You just need to have your banking information on hand, including your routing number and banking account number. You may also login to your partner account via Vault to enter in your banking information. The following must check out for your payments to be processed correctly:

• Routing number and account number must be correct
• Account must be a checking account
• The partner who is being paid must have his or her name on the account

How Earnings are Calculated

The fare you see when you end a trip will not be the final amount you are paid for that trip, it is the total amount that is being charged to the rider.  There are several things that make up this number:

1. Trip Fare: this is based on the time and distance of the trip, the rates can be found by selecting your city here.
2. Booking Fee: each trip includes a booking fee, which may vary by city, that Uber collects from the rider on your behalf.  This fee is used to cover the costs of insurance and safety features. It does not affect your fare from trip, which is calculated based on time and distance.
3. Tolls:if you had to pay a toll while on the trip, or crossed a bridge that requires a toll going either direction the total amount of this toll will be included in the fare.

Your earnings for each trip will only include the Trip Fare and any Tolls. There is also an Uber Fee associated with each trip, which is applied based on a % of the Trip Fare. This Uber Fee goes toward use of the Uber platform, including: support, credit card processing fees, and marketing to drive additional business to you. Visit your city’s section of the website for more information on the Uber Fee rates. The Uber Fee is never applied to tolls, for which you receive direct reimbursement in full.

To become a new driver partner you will need to sign-up and upload a few documents or existing users can log-in from your mobile phone. Uploading your documents on Uber is easy!  You can even do it right from your smartphone, in your car. Take a picture of the following documents

Personal Documents

1. Drivers License

To be an Uber driver-partner in you must have a valid official or temporary drivers license. Your license must clearly show your photo, name and issue date in the picture.

2. Background Check Concent

After you enter you social security number in the application your background check could take up to 1 week & will need to clear, this part should automatically upload.

 Vehicle Documents:

1. Vehicle Registration

Uber can accept both official and temporary registration documents, as long as the VIN, issue date and expiration dates are clearly shown in the picture. The vehicle registration document does not need to be in your name.

2. Vehicle Insurance

Your personal vehicle insurance must meet the minimum requirements under state law. You do not need to be the primary driver on the insurance, however your name must be displayed as an insured driver for the vehicle. The insurance document must show VIN, make, model, effective date and expiration date in the picture. 

3. Vehicle Inspection Form

Your vehicle must undergo a 19 point inspection before you are able to drive on the Uber platform. Please refer to the inspection form.

That’s it, now you wait until Uber approves all these documents. Once you are approved you can now Go Online and start driving & picking up passengers.

The process of becoming an Uber driver is pretty simple and straight-forward. So, how to become an Uber driver? If you want to be your own boss and drive for Uber, you only have to do 3 simple things…that’s it.

How to become an Uber driver – guide

Step 1 – Complete an application online here.

• Provide your personal information so that Uber can perform a background check.
• Provide vehicle information and pictures (front & rear bumper and interior). If you do not have a vehicle you can still sign-up and get leasing options from Uber affiliates.
• Upload driver’s license, car registration, and insurance. (you do not need to own the vehicle, but your name must be on the insurance policy) learn more about driver qualifications.

Step 2 – Get your car inspected.

Uber has a car inspection station (type your city in top right hand corner of site) in many cities where they’ll inspect your car at no cost. Go to vehicle inspection to learn more about what is needed in the inspection.

You can also have a 3rd party inspect your car.

It’s simple stuff. They just want to make sure that your car is in normal working order: lights, seat belts, etc.

Step 3 – Pass the background check.

After step 1 and 2 are done, you just wait until your background check has cleared. Learn more about driver qualifications.

They check, if you’ve had any of the following in the past 7 years:

• DUI or drug-related offenses.
• Driving without insurance or license.
• Fatal accidents or a history of reckless driving.
• Criminal history.

It only took 3 days for mine to go through, but it can take more than a week. During this time, you’ll receive a kit in the mail. It contains a small Welcome manual, an aux cord, and an “Uber” sticker to display on the inside windshield of your car.

Start driving!

After these 3 steps are completed you can start driving. You should receive an e-mail from Uber letting you know you are activated. If you don’t receive one within a few days after completing these steps, then you can either contact your local Uber support team or follow these instructions:

1. Log in to the Uber partner app on Android or iPhone and sign in.
2. You should see a button at the top of the screen that says “Go Online”. Click on that and one of two things will happen.
   1. You see a message saying that you are not approved to drive yet. If this happens, make sure you completed all of the steps above. Also, check your e-mail to see if Uber sent you anything asking you to upload documents, etc. If you’re sure you completed everything then you may still have to wait on the background check. Sometimes, but rarely, they take a couple weeks to process. Contact your local Uber support team and ask the status of your application.
   2. The other thing that will happen is a map appears where you can start accepting ride requests. This indicates that you are approved and can start driving.

If there’s no official Uber car inspection station near where you are, no problem. You can get your car inspected by a third party. Make sure to bring the Uber Inspection Form with you.

Uber gives you a few options to get your vehicle inspection done:

Option 1: Certain areas and Cities have negotiated a fixed price with participating mechanics. There’ll be a link to a list of participating locations on the page. Pricing is usually around $20 for a car inspection.

Option 2: Get your vehicle inspected at a BAR certified auto shop close to you. BAR means Bureau of Automotive Repair.

Option 3: Uber is partnering with Your Mechanic. Your Mechanic is a service that comes to where you are. You’ll get a fixed upfront price, book an appointment, and then conveniently make your payment. The mechanic will come to your address, complete a full Uber vehicle inspection plus an oil change for $50.

What are the Uber vehicle requirements from basic to luxury to SUV

Minimum Requirements

• Seating: Must seat 4 passengers (not including the driver)
• Model Year: 15 year max vehicle age (ex: a 2001 can be used through 2016)
• Body Style: Must be a 4-door vehicle
• No cosmetic damage
• No commercial branding or taxi color paint jobs
• No large passenger vans or commercial/Heavy Duty trucks
• No salvaged vehicles and/or rebuilt vehicles
• Vehicle must be registered and insured in the state of California
• Driver’s full legal name must be listed on the vehicle insurance
• All drivers must pass a full background check start application now

UberX Vehicle Requirements

UberX is the basic service from Uber. Anywhere Uber offers service they will offer UberX. UberX is for a maximum of 4 passengers. For example: You shouldn’t take 5 passengers if you only have 4 seat belts. You can get a pretty serious fine AND all the passengers fined as well if you are caught with more passengers than you have seat belts for.

As long as you meet the qualifications to drive for Uber and your vehicle meets the requirements, you will be qualified to drive for UberX.

UberX is going to have the most requests from passengers. However, UberX is also going to have the lowest rates and the most competition.

UberX vehicle requirements include:

• You must drive a 4 door car, SUV, truck, or mini-van
• Your vehicle must have a clean title
• Your vehicle must be model year 2006 or newer in most cities
• Your vehicle must have at least 5 seat belts

 

UberXL Vehicle Requirements

UberXL is the Uber service for 5-6 passengers and people who need more cargo space (airport runs). You need to have 7 seatbelts in the vehicle. One for you and 6 for passengers.

As an UberXL driver you will get less requests than UberX. The default option for UberXL is to drive for BOTH UberX and UberXL. If you wish to turn off UberX requests you will need to contact your local Uber Partner office or Uber support.

To qualify for UberXL you must meet all the requirements listed above PLUS:

• Your car must be able to sit 6 passengers PLUS the driver (7 total seat belts)
• Year 2006 or newer
• Remember that FULL Size vans such as commercial vehicles are not approved for Uber

 

UberSELECT Vehicle Requirements

UberSELECT is a mid-tier option from Uber. It is for riders looking for an affordable luxury car experience. It also used to be known as UberPLUS. This is the entry level Uber premium offering. UberSELECT rates are significantly higher than UberX. Uber also takes out a larger fee (28% at the time of this writing vs. 20% for UberX). I found that while driving UberSELECT even with the higher fees I made twice as much per ride as I did with UberX.

The service comes at a premium fee but the passengers are guaranteed a nice clean car with leather interior. In order to qualify for uberSELECT, each of the following criteria must be met**:

UberSELECT requirements include:

• You own a vehicle from the “Eligible Vehicles” list below
• Leather interior required
• Mid-size to full-size vehicles – Spotless interior and exterior
• Must have a 4.5 or higher driver rating

To be considered for UberSELECT, vehicles must have leather seating and must be free of cosmetic and mechanical damage.

Typically, you will continue to be required to drive for UberX. You cannot turn off UberX requests as a UberSELECT Driver. (You need to be LUX/BLACK/SUV to be able to disable UberX requests.)

If your vehicle is not on the list below it may be possible to get your vehicle approved if you have leather seating and interior upgrades. Some drivers have taken their car to their local Uber Partner office or Uber onboarding event to have their car inspected and see if they can get it approved for to drive UberSELECT.

**Even if all of the above criteria is met, the Uber Operations Team reserves the right to disallow participation in the UberSELECT class as seen fit.

This is an example UberSELECT list. The list varies by city. Newer Markets tend to have more relaxed requirements. Larger more established markets tend to have stricter requirements.

UberBLACK Vehicle Requirements

UberBLACK is Uber’s version of a black luxury sedan car service. This is one of the common ways for executives and corporate types to travel in major cities. In fact in London, UK they call this service UberEXEC.

UberBLACK vehicles must be luxury cars and require a spotless black leather interior and black exterior. Only the top mid-size and full-size sedans will be accepted. Additionally, drivers must carry commercial vehicle registration and insurance. Drivers must have chauffeur license. The driver must also have an airport permit if required in your area.

It may be possible to have Uber disable UberX on your account if you are approved for UberBLACK. Contact your local Uber partner office for more details.

UberBLACK vehicle requirements are:

• Black exterior REQUIRED. No visual dings, or imperfections.
• Leather interior REQUIRED. Black is strongly preferred but other colors may be acceptable. Clean interior.
• Model 2012 or newer (may be older in some markets)
• Commercial registration and insurance
• Must have airport permits if required in your area

UberBLACK driver requirements are also stricter. You cannot have more than 5 traffic violations in the past 5 years. (As opposed to 3 in 3 years for other Uber services.) You must also pass an Uber vehicle inspection.

UberBLACK vehicles will be a step up from UberSELECT. For example, a BMW 3 Series, Audi A4, Mercedes C Series may be ok for UberSELECT but you will need at least a BMW 5 Series, Audi A6, or Mercedes E Class for UberBLACK. Additionally, the model year jumps from 2007 to 2012.

UberSUV Vehicle Requirements

UberSUV is a service that combines luxury and size. This service is a combination of UberBLACK and UberXL. This service has the highest caliber of vehicle and driver standards. This is the service for people who want to ride in a high end SUV like a Cadillac Escalade, Mercedes GL-Class, or Lexus LX.

The qualifications for UberSUV and UberBLACK are the same except for the vehicles. You are held to the same driver standards for UberBLACK. Your vehicle is also held to the same standards except that you will have 7 seat belts. One for the driver and up to 6 for passengers.

UberLUX Vehicle Requirements

UberLUX is Uber’s premium The driver requirements for UberLUX are the same as those for UberBLACK. Drivers must carry commercial vehicle registration and insurance. The driver must also have an airport permit if required in your area.

The vehicle requirements are a little bit different.   In my experience this list varies GREATLY for smaller markets. A car that might qualify as LUX in London. For example, I got approved driving a Black on Black BMW 535i in Austin, Texas. This wouldn’t be considered acceptable in larger markets. In fact, I received some negative ratings from passengers that were expecting a higher end vehicle.

Full size four door sedan, SUV, or crossover

• Excellent exterior and interior condition
• Comfortably seats 4+ passengers (full size luxury vehicle)
• 2010 or newer
• Pass an Uber inspection

UberPOOL Vehicle Requirements

UberPOOL is only available in limited markets. UberPOOL is Uber’s car pool service.

UberPOOL riders are given a discounted rate but they are willing to ride with another passenger(s). Passengers can request a ride for up to 2 people. The app tries to match them with riders traveling the same direction. In exchange riders are given a discounted rate.

If UberPOOL is available in your area all UberX drivers are required to accept UberPOOL rides.

UberTAXI Vehicle Requirements

UberTAXI is only available in limited markets. UberTAXI is Uber’s taxi service. You will need to be licensed cab/livery driver. If you are not currently licensed Uber will help you obtain a license.

Know what the pesonal qualifications are to be an Uber Driver

All drivers with Uber need to meet certain requirements. These include your age, your driving history, your residency, and your insurance.  Your vehicle will also  have to meet certain requirements to qualify to drive for Uber.  Additionally, Uber has different levels of service. Your vehicle may qualify you to earn more driving as a Luxury ride or as a plus sized vehicle that can fit extra passengers or cargo, learn more about Uber vehicle requirements.

Uber Driver Requirements

These Uber driver requirements are current as of June 2016. Sign-up with the drive for Uber site to confirm the most recent requirements.

• You must be 21 years of age or older
• You must drive a 4 door car, SUV, truck, or mini-van (with clean title) that is 2006 or newer in most cities (2 and 3 door vehicles are not allowed. You do not need to be the owner of the vehicle)
• You must have in state auto insurance with your name on the policy (in some regions you may be required to carry additional coverage.)
• You must have in state driver’s license for at least one year
• You must have in state plates with current registration.
• You must pass a background check and driving check. Immediate Disqualification if you appear on:
  • National Sex Offender Registry
  • State Sex Offender Registry
  • Suspected Terrorist Databases
• Disqualification if within the past 7 years you had:
  • DUI or drug related driving conviction
  • Fraud
  • Reckless driving
  • Hit and runs
  • Violent crimes (assault, battery, homicide)
  • Acts of terror
  • Sexual offenses
  • Crimes involving property damage
  • Felony or misdemeanor for theft (burglary, stealing, robbery, or anything similar)
  • Fatal accidents
  • Resisting / evading arrest
  • Any other felony
• Disqualification if within the past 3 years you were found guilty of:
  • Driving on a suspended, revoked, or invalid license
  • Driving with suspended, revoked, or invalid insurance
• Disqualification if within the past 3 years you have had a total of 3 minor violations or incidents including:
  • Accidents
  • Normal speeding tickets
  • Miscellaneous driving violations (traffic violations)
• Disqualification for Uber Black if within the past 5 years you have had a total of 5 minor violations or incidents including:
  • Accidents
  • Normal speeding tickets
  • Miscellaneous driving violations (traffic violations)

• You MUST have a smartphone. Your phone should be an iPhone 4s or newer or an Android 2013 or newer. This is important to being a driver as you need to have a phone that can run the Uber app flawlessly or you will miss ride requests. Missing ride requests hurts your driver rating and ability to qualify for guarantees. Uber also offers a service where you can rent a smartphone if you don’t have one. The iPhone rental fee is $15 a week. This is a pretty expensive option and you get a phone that only offers limited capability. It isn’t a normal iPhone. If you can afford it you are better off purchasing an iPhone or Android phone on your own.
• If you are driving in the USA, you need to a use a US cell phone number so you can communicate with your passengers.
